We warmly invite you to this month’s PreWorkTalk ‘Empower the Analog’ by Nancy Birkhölzer and Reto Wettach. We are super excited to give you an exclusive sneak preview of their talk being held at Typo Berlin on Thursday, May 16th, 3pm at Haus der Kulturen der Welt.

Our PreWorkTalk will take place on Tuesday May 14th. We are happy to welcome you at 8.30 am, the talk will start at 9.00 am.

EMPOWER THE ANALOG

The PC era shaped a computing culture characterized by funneling the digital world through a screen and a mouse. Our current post-PC-devices – such as smartphones and tablets – let us participate in our networked world through smaller screens, touch interfaces and an app for any possible need. But is this really all we can expect from our devices? Do we want to spend our lives staring at small screens, interacting with only two fingers – missing out on the world around us while we follow the latest post and hunt for the newest app? Is the current way we deal with computation really going to help us towards solving the big challenges of our time? Do we as designers even want this as our design focus?

Some recent trends – such as the slow food movement, and an increasing public acknowledgement of a need to switch off, focus and simplify – highlight a new attention to the analog qualities of our lives. This changes our expectations of the digital world, and designing digital services is no longer the aim. Instead we want to empower individuals to live up to their aspirations – and design a service ecosystem in support. We want to empower our bodies and live like “complete” humans again, using all of our senses and physical capabilities. With networked objects, specialized haptic interfaces and new mobile tools, digital technology is increasingly blending with our “real” world. This is a tremendous opportunity to give people new ways of acting in the world, with endless possibilities for everyone’s enablement.

Energy, Risk, the Economy and You

Matt Beer is a former chemical and energy efficiency engineer from Australia who has spent the last 2 years researching and creating an animated guide to peak oil as well as running climateexperiment.com.

In his talk Matt will focus on energy in our globalised economy. Oil in particular is so embedded in everything we do, most of us take for granted what this toxic black goo has done to our lives. But this period of oil abundance is drawing to a close and it will be replaced by a period of high and volatile prices that will have massive implications to our economy and your place in it. Join Matt in a discussion about an issue that will define your life over the coming decades.

Motion Graphics from “Institut für Trickfilmforschung”

Florian Köhne is a motion graphics designer, animator and director based in Berlin. His work concentrates on animated infographics, mixing contemporary computer graphics with traditional animation techniques.

We’ve been busy catching up with the latest trends in technology. Last week hosting our own IXDS booth on the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona and this week visiting CeBit in Hannover. We’re excited to share and discuss our insights with you next Tuesday, March 12th. We are happy to welcome you at 8.30 am, the talk will start at 9.00 am.

Berlin Impressions from the Mobile World Congress and CeBit

The Mobile World Congress 2013 was with over 72.000 attendees the largest MWC ever. Not only most major handset manufactures and large international telcos exhibited their current vision of this field, but also tons of smaller and highly innovative companies presented themselves and their take on the future of mobile. Taking place in Barcelona, the fair is known for bringing a glimpse of Spanish life-style to the mobile community and through this enable conversations beyond the standard business talk.

In this month’s PreWorkTalk Berliners will report on their personal highlights and inspirations of their visits at MWC and CeBit.
Several speakers, including Gil Rosen fromT-Labs and Felix Wieduwilt from MLOVE, as well as Reto Wettach and Nancy Birkhölzer from IXDS, will share their impressions. Amongst other observations we will discuss new gestures to connect displays and devices, how the classroom of the future might look like and how m2m finally becomes fun.

We are looking forward to learn about their insights and discuss about the latest technology trends.

Drawing Machines

Sonice Development is a Berlin based group of artists and inventors. Most of their work is focussed on drawing machines and interactive installations. Their most prominent invention is the Facadeprinter, a machine that paints huge artworks onto walls using paintballs.
Michael and Julian will talk about their pursuit to create new aesthetics through new techniques.

New Practices of Video Mapping in Art and Design

Jacques-André is an audiovisual creative, active in motion design, VJing & light installations. He will talk about video mapping, a technique currently spreading into the field of art and design. Breaking the rectangle boundaries of the audiovisual format, video mapping offers a variety of surfaces to project on, allowing the creator to augment or change our perception of reality.
Additionally, Jacques-André will show his work in progress, the ”augmented painting” concept.

IxDS on Service Design

We have been busy these last couple of months, getting immersed in Service Design!

Starting last June at the National Service Design Network Conference in Cologne our managing director and partner Nancy Birkhölzer co-hosted the event and gave the conference’s keynote on Transformative Services together with Melanie Wendland.

In October our Seniors Julia Werner and Verena Augustin headed to the Service Design Global Conference in Paris, where they gave a workshop on how the service design process can benefit from cultural differences.

And finally we are proud to be part of the current issue of Touchpoint with Nancy Birkhölzer as editor of this month’s issue. Read her articles about the German SDN Conference (together with Thomas Schönweiz) here and about Designing Transformative Services (together with Melanie Wendland) here.

Touchpoint Volume 4 No. 3 has as main topic this year’s global conference theme: Cultural Change by Service Design. Some speakers took up their pens and transformed their gripping speeches into equally interesting articles. They give an insight into the presentations and workshops which took place in Paris, investigating how positive economic, social and cultural change can be assisted by the use of design. This issue contains also a chapter about Creating Value(s), the national german conference’s theme.

We are hiring: Visual Designer for mobile UIs

We are looking for an all-around sympathetic person to work with us on our project as an interface/interaction designer with strong graphic skills, especially for the mobile area.

The Project

We will work on a multiplatform app for personal communication in a multidisciplinary team. Besides building a decent and welcoming user interface, we are expected to explore ways for a smooth OS integration and further interactive possibilities.

The project’s time frame is from around
now :) – 30.03. 2013 with about 3,4,5 days/week. The project is very likely to be extended beyond March.

What we’re looking for

You should be passionate about:

top-notch GUI design across all media and devices
creating mobile UIs based on a solid understanding of Android and/or iOS styleguides
adopting and adapting interface design patterns and standards
finding the right expression to reach the goals of a UX strategy
usability and user-centered design processes

Additionally, you should be able to communicate fluently with:

colleagues implementing your designs
colleagues engaging in user research

What you can look forward to
