Woman’s Phone

Concepts for Female Communication

In collaboration with Deutsche Telekom Laboratories, IxDS investigated the specific relationship of women and their mobile phones. Based on the assumption that women conceive of their phones differently than manufacturers want to make believe, we developed a number of concepts to uncover this perspective. The following working prototypes are examples for the result of this approach, emphasizing the more sensitive relationship.

ClipOn prototype

Example 1: ClipOn

Women are hesitant to wear their phone in a pocket, or to make use of a wireless headset. The ClipOn discretely indicates incoming calls using a gentle vibration. It can be conveniently clipped onto garments, key-chains or bags and thus in a handy location to be notified of incoming calls. Calls can be directly muted.  No need to panically search your phone again.

HeartPiece prototype

Example 2: HeartPiece

The HeartPiece addresses the insight that a women would like their phone to appear and behave differently in different situations – the same reason why they sometimes own two. Thus, the HeartPiece is a reduced phone with just the core capablities that can be extended wit different shells. The core connects you to your dearest family and friends at all times. Put on a shell to extend communication to everyone, take it off to relax.
